Monterey beach, Pebble beach, Aquarium and Elephant Seals.

17 Mile road at Pebble Beach Resort.

On Monday we went for a drive along the coast. It is called the 17 miles road and guess how long is was?

The little drive along the coast was nice with different stops. Apparently is has one of the best golf courses in the word, Cypress Point as well as the more famous Pebble Beach Course. Beautiful white beaches but windy. We saw seals, otters, sea lions, crabs, vultures and crows.

At the first stop we went rock climbing and found crabs. Henry thought it was great. The second stop we saw sea lions and seals, well we heard them and used our binoculars to see them out on a rock.

We bought picnic lunch and stopped along the road and looked out over the beach and water and ate it. It was a lovely day.

Yesterday we went to the aquarium here in Monterey Bay. It is one of the largest aquariums in the world. They had lot of different areas to go and look in and a touch and feel area. They also had lots of activities for the children all the way around which Henry really liked. The only negative was that it was so busy! We spent about 3 hours there and we pretty much arrived when they opened.

After the aquarium, we went for lunch at Bubba Gump’s shrimp factory. They had lots of different shrimp dishes. I’m not a lover of shrimps so I had a veggie burger but Stephen loved it. Henry had Mac and Cheese. There was a little wait for a table but we had a walk around the area so it didn’t matter.

On our way back to our motel we stopped at a Barber in town. Both Henry and Stephen had a haircut which they had very much been waiting for. Henry did so well sitting still and he looks two years older now with his long hair has gone. The barber is the only one around but they were great, a nice old fashion place run by a 24-year-old man called Phil. Now we need to buy hair gel tomorrow!

We ended the night at the same Italian restaurant that we went to on Monday, it is a great place with good Italian food.

Today we drove from Monterey Bay to Pismo Beach. It took way longer than we thought once again because of the weather. The road we were going to drive on had a massive mudslide on one of the bridges so it was closed. So we had to go all the way round. We had a few stops along the way and one of them was going to see Elephant Seals on a beach! So amazing. First, we went on the wrong beach and there were none. But then Stephen asked a lady and she told us which beach to go to and there were lots! They are huge and can weigh more than 2 tons. They were fighting each other and messing around. It was really nice to see. We are going to be here until tomorrow and then we are going to the woods again.

Cold San Francisco and naked men.

Warning: pictures of naked people below.

We have been so cold! Why didn’t we know it was going to be so cold!

After we stayed in Yosemite we drove towards San Francisco. Stephen had found an animal rescue park on the way but it didn’t seem to exist on the map. So, we found a park called Caswell Memorial State Park, we drove there thinking we could have a little play and then keep going. But when we got there all the people getting out of their cars were wearing swimming clothes. So, I asked a family if there were anywhere you could swim around there and they said there was a little beach around the corner. As it was nearly 50 degrees we thought that would be perfect. It was a great little spot but the water was freezing! Stephen went in and Henry played in it for two hours.

This is the first stop we made, it was a view platform and they have seals down by the water ,but they weren't there that day.

In San Francisco it was busy! We were so glad when we arrived at our hotel and could leave the car and not worry about it for a couple of days. But it was so cold! From 50 degrees, we came down to 15! We went on one of those hop on hop off buses and went around the city. The first day we went to the museum and it was fantastic. Henry kept saying “I can’t believe it, this is so good”. He was jumping on the spot the whole way around. We also hired some bikes and cycled around the park and found the American bison’s that roam around there. Stephen was on a bike that pulled a trolley so Henry could just sit back and relax, he loved it!

We have also eaten great food, seen amazing buildings, been in vintage stores and sat on the square listening to music while drinking wine.

Yesterday was Pride festival. We went down to watch it and wow it was special! You could see big men in dresses, golden people dancing, flags everywhere, load music, people dressed as animals, animals dressed as people and lots and lots of naked people!

I complained that it’s never the good looking, young men that are naked it is always the old saggy men. Stephen then said well you don’t see any young boobs either!

Yosemite

We left Yosemite today without seeing a single bear! They even gave us a room which had a view of a bear trail where a black bear walks every night. But did we see it… no!

First day we saw Big Ed which is a huge Giant Sequoias tree. In the park, they had a Sequoia chopped down and it showed all the rings inside and they thought it was over 1000 years old. How cool.

The second day we got up super early to beat the traffic into the park and got halfway then about 8 cars in front of us there was a fire next to the road. So, the traffic stopped. We thought it was a tree but when we got out of the car we saw that it was a car on fire. The fire engine was there after 20 min and took it out. Then after another 10 min we could go around it. It was 4 people in their 20s driving it and it looked like they basically just stopped the car, threw the stuff out of the boot and got out of there before it took fire. Pretty scary.

It was a full-on fire with the petrol tank exploding and the trees around it caught on fire as well.

We got to the Yosemite park an hour later and it was pretty busy but we managed to get a spot. They have busses that go to different parts of the park all day long so we just jumped on one of those and jumped off by the waterfall. The walk from the bus stop to the waterfall would normally take about 30 min. But I have two boys and they both loves to climb, so it took us about 45 min. We jumped on stones, hid in trees and Stephen hurt his knee when he jumped off one big rock.

The waterfall was impressive and we got soaked! After that we had a great walk and play in the forest. We played pooh-sticks over bridges, climbing up rocks, got eaten alive by mosquitos and had races. Later, we had picnic at some benches and went home.

In the evening we went next door to our hotel where they had an old steam train. They had arranged an evening where we could pan for gold in the water, have dinner with entertainment and then a ride on the train.

It was great, we actually found gold all of us. Henry also found a frog who jumped up on his head. We then sat down and had a bbq dinner with live music. Four men and a lady that played guitar, banjo and tambourine. Really lovely. Then we all went on the train and it took us into the forest where they had a campfire and more music. We were back by 9.30 and we walked through the forest. Not even then did we see a bear.

Henry walked so much here in the forest and there is me saying he doesn’t like walking. We loved Yosemite and would come back later when Henry can do some more.

Fathers day walks in mammoth lakes.

Fathers day started of nice and early. Stephen got a sleep in and me and Henry watched Netflix on the sofa. We then gave daddy a lovely new mug and we started our day. So to all fathers out there , Happy fathers day.

We started by walking up a volcano in the woods. It was a grand wood with huge trees. Henry did some climbing and all of a sudden we saw some snow! So we had a snowball fight in our shorts and T-shirts. Then we kept walking and got to the top after a few arguments. Henry hates walking. He would drag his feet until we pick him up. That isn’t such a big problem because he is so small but he is 3,5 years old and should walk more than he does. He is just lazy. (Like all men)

We got up to the crater and it was pretty impressive. There was water at the bottom that was very blue. Stephen walked a bit further but me and Henry stopped and had a rest.

Then we got back in the car and drove to the earthquake faults. We had lunch and played hide and seek behind the trees, it was lovely. It is a bit cooler here than it has been, about 27 degrees, so it is nice and you can move around without sweating too much. We found the earthquake faults and had a good look around and walked back to the car.

After that we went to the hot creek, which is a creek that is hot because it is above a magma fault in the volcano.  We walked down to it and the colour is amazing! It is so blue it looks like it has been painted. It was steaming and it said that 14 people has died because they had been swimming in it.

Yesterday we had a relax in the morning and then we drove to Pioneer. It took us four hours but we drove through some beautiful forest and had four little stops. When we arrived at the motel it was a pretty little motel with a pool so, Henry was naked before we could get our bags in from the car. He and Stephen then went swimming while I set the table outside with picnic food. It was a great evening. We even saw hummingbirds flying around.

Pioneer was just a stop we had to do because the road we were suppose to have taken to Yosemite is closed so we are doing a detour. This has taken us double the time but then we got to see more of the pretty landscape so it doesn’t really matter.

We still haven’t seen any bears. There are supposed to be bears in these forests but we haven’t seen any yet. So today we are on a bear hunt while driving to Yosemite.

Hot, hot, hot.

Vegas, Death Valley and Mammoth Lakes.

The last couple of days have been hot! We drove from Vegas yesterday to Death Valley and we nearly hit 50 degrees! HOT!

Vegas was surprising. I have never been before so I didn’t know what to expect but as we drove from Beaver through the desert and Vegas suddenly appeared. It was one strip and that was all. We didn’t have an amazing time in Vegas because Henry got ill on the way there, he was sick in the car and then all day. It was just a 24-hour thing for him but when he was ok then I got it.

So, we were in Vegas 2 days and Henry was sick the first day and I was sick the second. We went out for a meal but only Stephen ate something. He also played on the roulette table and won £120! He could have won more but chickened out! We did manage to take Henry to the Avengers superhero thing. It is a training centre for kids (and adults) to become super heroes. Henry thought it was a bit scary but it was well made. Our hotel was on the strip and we had a great view. At 8pm at night the hotel next door had a volcano show,  they had fire going from one of their pools. The hotel next to that one had a fountain show going at the same time.

We drove to Death Valley the day after.  En-route we stopped at devil’s golf course and the lowest point in America. It was too hot for me and Henry so we stayed in the car with the AC on while Stephen went out to look and take pictures. We stayed at a hotel for one night. When we got there Stephen started to feel bad and he has been sick since.

Then we had snow....
Then we had snow….

Henry and I went to the pub last night on our own to get some food.

Today we have driven to Mammoth Lakes, starting at -82m and 50degrees to 2402m and 28degrees.   We were supposed have 3 nights here but the road to Yosemite is still closed because of snow. It is normally open in May so now we got a few extra hours to drive and have had to sacrifice a night in Mammoth Lakes.

It has cooled down a lot since yesterday and we can see the snow on the mountains. Henry wants to go to the snow tomorrow. We’ll see what we can find. I asked him if he likes traveling and he said “ yes, because we are not on a holiday, we are exploring”.
