What do you need for a road trip?

Aloha Hawaii 🙂

The road trip is over and after 3500 miles on the road Tuesday was the first time we flew for over a month. We have not stayed in one place longer than 3 or 4 days then packed the car up again and kept moving. I must say that it has been ok, we have managed perfectly fine. In most places Stephen and I have had a bed and Henry has had one too. In a few he has had a blow-up mattress that we brought with us. And some rooms have been bigger than others. It has been a mixture of Hotels, Motels and apartments from Airbnb.

I thought I would write a little checklist what we have thought about it and what we have needed/used.

One of the best things we bought early on was a cool-bag. In there we would have our drinks, cheeses, butter, yoghurts etc. for breakfast/lunch.  In the apartments we have had kitchens and in some of the hotels and motels we haven’t had breakfast included.

Another thing that has saved us is the kindle we bought for Henry before we left England. We have been traveling with him since he was 6 weeks old and we know how boring it can be for him to sit still for long times. But on the kindle, he has games, movies and books. Lately we have downloaded apps with letters and numbers so he has started learning how to write. Other games we have is puzzles, memory and silly Spiderman games. But Henry really loves his kindle. We got headphones to go with it because we also know how annoying it is to hear someone else’s game or film.

We do lots of stops along the way and they don’t have to be long or anything super exciting. Just jumping on rocks or walks in the woods.

And we nearly always have picnics along the way for lunch rather than eat in restaurants/ McDonalds /Burger king. We do do that now and then. When we drove between Moab and Beaver we stopped for lunch next to a huge field of cows. They all stared at us when we sat down and had our sandwiches.

Another thing that is great for Henry is colouring pens and a notebook where he can draw. That has become one of those things that he loves doing in the car lately. We bought a notebook that I thought he can fill with drawings along the way. It is quite nice to keep afterwards.

Snacks! First, we had crisps, biscuits etc. in the car, but then we realised that Henry (and the adults) thought it was quite nice to have pieces of apple, grapes and bananas along the road. I think that is most things. Oh, and my mum she sent a neck pillow a while back for Henry, it is a small one. And I thought it was rubbish but we tried it on the plane at one point and Henry loves it in the car. He puts it on and then he is quite happy going to sleep.

We said from the start that we wanted to travel lightly. We bought two North Face bags that are easy to pack things in, they are extendable, got great wheels and a sturdy handle. The best things about the bags are that they have handles on all the sides so it is really easy to pick them up. We didn’t pack too many clothes as we said we would exchange them as we go. And we have already thrown out a few T-shirts and I have binned 3 pairs of trousers that I thought I would wear but I haven’t. We don’t have any stuff with us more than Henrys toys that he carries in his own backpack. So in one suitcase we have all our clothes and in the other we have beach stuff, i.e. snorkels, flippers, masks, wetsuits, towels, swim clothes, scooter, hats and shoes.

We got a smaller beach bag with all our toiletries in. This surprised me how much toiletries that we need. I.e. toothpaste/ toothbrushes/ face washes/ razors/ hairbrushes/sun screams/shampoo etc. They all take so much space and I have been going through it a few times and we have binned what is not necessary.

And then we have Henrys car seat with us, in there we sneak a few bits, like his helmet and his blow up bed. So all in all we have two suitcases, one car seat, one beach bag that we check in. Then we all have a backpack each. Henry with his toys, me with cameras and passports and Stephen with all the kindles, computer and sat nav.

This is the most driving we are going to do. Some days it has been up to 5 hours in the car, which is quite a lot. Henry has been ok with it. But it is quite nice now when we are in Waikiki with no car. Henry has his scooter that we take when we walk to the beach/restaurants.

The best thing about the road trip was all the great places we saw that we wouldn’t if we didn’t have the car. And that it was so easy to travel, you just threw all the bags and things in the boot and off you went. The worst things about the road trip was that we were always moving, there were no unpacking and settle ever!

I don’t have any pictures to go with the text so I will put random pictures/best of from the road trip of the USA, that is now behind us.
